Slipped? Let’s get back on track

A slip is not failure – it’s part of the process. Each setback is a chance to learn, adjust and try again with more insight and support.

What counts as a setback?

  • Slip: A puff, dip or single use after quitting.
  • Relapse: Returning to regular use.

Neither setback means failure. Most people try multiple times before quitting for good.

Getting back on track

After a slip or relapse, pause with kindness. You’ve done hard things already and you can do this, too. Try this:

  • Stop using tobacco right away.
  • Toss remaining cigarettes, vapes or chew.
  • Use nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) if it’s part of your quit plan.
  • Reach out to a Quitpath coach.
  • Reflect on what triggered it without judgement.
  • Reconnect with your support system.
  • Tweak your space or routines to reduce triggers.
  • Notice what’s working, keep it up.

Long-term strengthening

  • Update your quit plan using what you’ve learned along the way.
  • Rely on your support system whenever you need it.
  • Test new strategies to handle cravings and triggers.
  • Keep adding healthy routines to your day.
  • Celebrate your resilience: every comeback matters.

Final reminder: Quitting is not 1 big moment. It’s a series of steps, choices and days. If you’ve done it before, you can do it again. You’re learning, you’re healing and you’re not alone.
